Objectives


The BBOI project aims to boost the potential of photonic integration technologies far beyond the state-of-the-art, radically changing current thinking on photonic integration, and creating the technology conditions to break away from today’s “device” level, up to a “system-on-a-chip” new paradigm. The complexity of photonic integrated circuit (PICs) will be boosted by at least one order of magnitude, attaining integration of more than one hundred optical functions onto the same PIC, without increasing operating power consumption in proportion.

The final goal of the project will build on the following eight intermediate strategic objectives:
High complexity photonic integrated circuits (application to classical optics)
Obj. 1.     Understanding the electrical properties of silicon optical waveguides
Obj. 2.     Non-perturbative electrical probing of light radiation
Obj. 3.     Electrically driven self-holding optical actuators
Obj. 4.     Permanent trimming of silicon optical waveguides
Obj. 5.     Silicon platform for highly complex photonic circuits
Obj. 6.     Control & Calibration layer for high complexity PICs
Obj. 7.     High complexity photonic integrated circuits (application to quantum optics)
Obj. 8.     High complexity photonic integrated circuits (application to classical optics)
